J.E. Carpenter has been an avid indoor and outdoor gardener for more than 30 years, and has been involved in many gardening organizations, serving as an officer, public speaker, and plant show judge. Her plants have won many blue ribbons and several best in class awards. Her special areas of expertise are herbs, perennials, and flowering houseplants.

In the past, she was employed at a commercial greenhouse and owned a small greenhouse of her own, where she grew orchids, gesneriads, begonias, and other flowering house plants. She also has extensive experience growing under fluorescent lights.

She is a nonpracticing attorney who presently resides in Fernandina Beach, Florida. When she is not gardening, she is involved in amateur theater, drawing and painting, and freelance writing. Her garden-related articles have appeared in Greenprints and BackHome magazines, and other nonfiction has appeared in Writer's Journal. Her short stories have appeared in Semaphore and Necrology.
